Those bankers, stockbrokers, and mortgage lenders whose actions helped cause the recession were able to act as they did, seemingly without shame or guilt, perhaps because their moral identity standard was set at a low level, and the behavior that followed from their personal standard went unchallenged by their colleagues, Stets explained.
"To the extent that others verify or confirm the meanings set by a person's identity standard and expressed in a person's behavior, the more the person will continue to engage in these behaviors," Stets said of the theory of moral identity she and Carter advance. "One's identity standard guides his or her behavior. Then the person sees the reactions of others to his or her behavior. If others have a low moral identity and do not challenge the illicit behavior that follows from a person's identity standard, then the person will continue to do what he or she is doing. This is how immoral practices can emerge."
The sociologists surveyed a diverse group of more than 350 university students in a two-phase study that measured students' moral identity, assessment of specific situations as having a moral component, and moral emotions, such as guilt and shame. The students first were asked how they responded in specific situations where they had a choice to do the right or wrong thing; for example, copy another student's answers, drive home drunk, take an item, give to charity, allow another student to copy their answers, let a friend drive home drunk, return a lost item, or return money to a cashier.
Three months later, survey respondents were asked how to rate each scenario in moral terms, and how they thought individuals ought to feel following doing the right or wrong thing in each situation. The students placed themselves along a continuum between two contradictory characteristics ? honest/dishonest, caring/uncaring, unkind/kind, unfair/fair, helpful/not helpful, stingy/generous, compassionate/hardhearted, untruthful/truthful, not hardworking/hardworking, friendly/unfriendly, selfish/selfless, and principled/unprincipled. Respondents who received feedback from others that did not verify their moral identity standard were more likely to report guilt and shame than those whose identities were verified," they said.
The goal is to live up to one's self-view however that appears across the moral continuum from being very uncaring and unjust to very caring and very just, the researchers said. "When the meanings of one's behavior based on feedback from others are inconsistent with the meanings in one's identity standard, the person will feel bad," they said.
More research is needed to identify the source of moral identity meanings, Stets and Carter said. "Exposure to particular social contexts and individuals may encourage a higher moral identity," they said. "For example, when parents are involved in their children's lives, their children are more likely to recognize moral values. Schools can also sensitize individuals to moral meanings by providing an atmosphere that fosters justice, virtue, and volunteering. Religious traditions that promote reflection on moral issues and foster charitable work also help individuals recognize moral meanings."
Studying the moral self is opportune given the practices of bankers, stockbrokers, and mortgage lenders whose behavior, in some cases, helped facilitate the recent recession in the United States, Stets and Carter said.
"The cost of their irresponsible practices has touched the lives of many innocent victims, as witnessed in the loss of individuals' retirement savings, homes, and jobs. The fact that a few greedy actors have the potential to damage the lives of many (as evidenced in the Bernie Madoff case) brings issues of right and wrong, good and bad, and just and unjust to public awareness," they said. "To understand the illicit behavior of some, we need to study the moral dimension of the self and what makes some individuals more dishonest than others."

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Supreme Court will once again confront the issue of race in university admissions in a case brought by a white student denied a spot at the flagship campus of the University of Texas.
The court said Tuesday it will return to the issue of affirmative action in higher education for the first time since its 2003 decision endorsing the use of race as a factor in admissions. This time around, a more conservative court is being asked to outlaw the use of Texas' affirmative action plan and possibly to jettison the earlier ruling entirely.
A broad ruling in favor of the student, Abigail Fisher, could threaten affirmative action programs at many of the nation's public and private universities, said Vanderbilt University law professor Brian Fitzpatrick.
A federal appeals court upheld the Texas program at issue, saying it was allowed under the high court's decision in Grutter vs. Bollinger in 2003 that upheld racial considerations in university admissions at the University of Michigan law school.
The Texas case will be argued in the fall, probably in the final days of the presidential election campaign, and the changed makeup of the Supreme Court could foretell a different outcome. For one thing, Justice Samuel Alito appears more hostile to affirmative action than his predecessor, Justice Sandra Day O'Connor. For another, Justice Elena Kagan, who might be expected to vote with the court's liberal-leaning justices in support of it, is not taking part in the case.
Kagan's absence probably is a result of the Justice Department's participation in the Texas case in the lower courts at a time when she served as solicitor general.
The challenge to the University of Texas program comes from Abigail Fisher, who filed a lawsuit with another woman when they were denied admission there. They contended the university's race-conscious policy violated their civil and constitutional rights. By then, the two had enrolled elsewhere.
The other woman has since dropped out of the case and the state has said that Fisher is a senior at Louisiana State University whose impending graduation should bring an end to the lawsuit. But the Supreme Court appeared not to buy that argument Tuesday.
The Project on Fair Representation, which opposes the use of race in public policy, has helped pay Fisher's legal bills. "This case presents the Court with an opportunity to clarify the boundaries of race preferences in higher education or even reconsider whether race should be permitted at all under the Constitution's guarantee of equal protection," said Edward Blum, the group's director.
The project also issued a statement in Fisher's name. "I hope the court will decide that all future UT applicants will be allowed to compete for admission without their race or ethnicity being a factor," she said.
Most entering freshmen at Texas are admitted because they are among the top 10 percent in their high school class. Fisher's grades did not put her in that category.
The Texas policy applies to the remaining spots and allows for the consideration of race along with other factors.
Texas had dropped affirmative action policies after a 1996 appeals court ruling. But following the high court ruling in 2003, the university resumed considering race starting with its 2005 entering class
Texas said its updated policy does not use quotas, which the high court has previously rejected.Instead, it said it takes a Supreme Court-endorsed holistic approach to enrollment, with an eye toward increasing the diversity of the student body.
Before adding race back into the mix, Texas' student body was 21 percent African-American and Hispanic, according to court papers.
By 2007, the year before Fisher filed her lawsuit, African-Americans and Hispanics accounted for more than a quarter of the entering freshman class.
Fitzpatrick said two other states, California and Florida, use similar "top 10" plans, although California law explicitly prohibits the consideration of race.
"But the vast majority of schools that are selective are using affirmative action, though they don't like to advertise it for fear of being sued," he said.
The case is Fisher v. University of Texas at Austin, 11-345.

Consider two common war cries of the adolescent age: "You can't make me or stop me!" "I don't care what you think!" Both are declarations of independence.
With the first war cry, the teenager lets parents know that she alone makes her decisions. This is true. Parental commands and prohibitions will only work if the teenager decides to cooperate with what they want. Compliance with their wishes requires her consent. While they are still in authority, she lets them know that from here on she is firmly in self-control. The cost of this assertion is not just more conflict with parents over to what degree she is going to live on their terms, but a scary realization that she is now at the mercy of her own inexperienced decision making. She has more freedom of choice than she can safely manage, and she knows it, which is why she continues to give so much consent to the family structure parents impose?for her own protection.
The second war cry is more complicated to honestly give because emotional independence of parental opinion and approval is harder to come by. "I don't care what you think!" is easier to say than to truly feel. Spoken in anger, this statement is an effort to emancipate the young person from the tyranny of pleasing parents that she felt bound by in childhood, a tyranny she must to some degree overthrow when she enters adolescence and needs to start doing more as she independently pleases.
Adolescence takes courage because the child must court and endure a greater degree of parental disapproval than in childhood. Driven by needs for separation (less communication), opposition (more argument), and differentiation (more experimentation), the adolescent begins redefining herself and her relationship to parents by letting the "bad child" out. "Bad" doesn't mean immoral, evil, or unlawful, but simply more abrasive to live with than in childhood.
The adolescent statement "I don't care what you think!" is an attempt to ease the heartache over parental approval that is necessarily sacrificed as she pushes against and pulls away from them to assert more independence and develop more individuality?the twin tasks of adolescence.
Unwittingly, when parents test the adolescent statement about not caring what they think by saying something critical, they get an even more explosive response: "I hate it when you criticize me!" Wonder the parents: "If she doesn't care what we think, how come she hates it when we criticize?" The answer is that she wishes she didn't care what parents think, but deep inside, the defiant adolescent still harbors an abiding desire to shine in parental eyes.
It is hard to gather the courage to sufficiently overthrow the tyranny of pleasing parents that was embraced in childhood, and the mutual admiration society that was once enjoyed, so that the more disenchanting work of adolescence can begin. The desire to strive for parental approval and to avoid parental disapproval is very hard to entirely dislodge. So in counseling I hear teenage complaints like "I wish I could stop wanting to please my dad!" "I wish I didn't hate it so when I displeased my mom!"
This conflict between pleasing parents and pleasing oneself can be acute. For example, an adolescent only child, usually closely attached to parents and dependent on their good opinion, often finds it very hard to stop working to be the child they want him to remain and to start working on the older person he desires to become.
Parents tend to think the teenager is just harder to live with for them. What they fail to grasp is that the teenager is also harder to live with for himself. By provoking more conflict with them, he feels more embattled. By making more unwise decisions, he makes more trouble for himself. By taxing his parents' tolerance and patience more frequently, he invites more of their displeasure. As he lets his "bad" side out, he becomes his own worst enemy, to some degree alienating the parents who used to feel so positively close.
Growing up is a lonely journey for the adolescent. He can't undertake it without offending the very people whose approval still matters most, his parents. With this understanding in mind, they must avoid personal criticism, be constant in their caring, find ways he and they can enjoy each other's company, and praise him whenever and wherever they honestly can. Should they fail to do this, not only is he likely to work harder at convincing himself that their good opinion of him doesn't matter, but he will be more prone to seek admiration from wayward peers with whom alienation from family may be a common bond.
When the adolescent says he doesn't care what parents think, they should not believe him. What he often means is that he cares too much to let his caring show, he misses the good standing with them he has lost, and wishes that he didn't care so much.
