Phelps goodbye as Ennis lights up Olympic Games

Michael Phelps bowed out of swimming with a final flourish on Saturday as poster-girl Jessica Ennis crowned one of British sport's most memorable days with the London Games' signature moment.

As Usain Bolt and Yohan Blake made their first appearance on the track, Phelps left clutching his 18th gold -- and 22nd medal overall -- after the 4x100m medley relay, the climax to races in the Aquatics Centre pool.

But the night's biggest roars were reserved for Ennis, who confirmed heptathlon gold with a surging 800m win that raised the 80,000-capacity Olympic Stadium crowd in a spine-tingling ovation.

Her victory was the highlight of a spectacular day eight for the hosts, who won six golds -- their most on a single day of Olympic competition for more than 100 years.

"I'm just so chuffed, I can't believe it," said the tearful Ennis. "After the javelin I knew I was in for a good score but I couldn't let myself believe it until I crossed the finish line."

As Ennis basked in the stadium applause, Britain's Greg Rutherford was a surprise winner in the long jump. And Mo Farah then sent the crowd into delirium when he won the men's 10,000m.

"It's never going to get better than this, this is the best moment of my life," said Farah.

Thanks to the triple haul -- Britain's most on one day of Olympic athletics -- and wins in rowing and cycling, the home team finished the day third on the medals table on 14 golds, behind the United States (26) and China (25).

"Our finest Olympic hour" was the headline in The Sunday Times, while The Sun tabloid called the gold-medallists, "The Six Pack".

In the pool relay, "Baltimore Bullet" Phelps, swimming the butterfly leg, made up more than half-a-second over his second 50m as he reeled in leaders Japan. Nathan Adrian finished the job with an explosive freestyle close.

The race ended the greatest swimming career in Olympic history, after Phelps' unmatched eight gold medals at Beijing 2008. In London, he outstripped Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina as the most decorated Olympian.

"It's tough to put into words right now," Phelps said. "I did everything I wanted to do."

Earlier, Sun Yang took more than three seconds off his own 1500m world record to seal China's fifth swimming gold -- making it their best Olympics in the pool.

Sun, who flirted with a shock disqualification when he dived in well before the rest of the field, smashed the water repeatedly and cried tears of joy after the race, before getting out and bowing to the stands.

Dutch speedster Ranomi Kromowidjojo completed a sprint double with victory in the women's 50m freestyle, and Missy Franklin led the United States to a 4x100m medley gold in a world record time of 3min 52.05sec.

The win meant the United States finished the pool events with 16 swimming golds, including four for the 17-year-old Franklin, their newest superstar.

South Africa's Oscar Pistorius became the first double amputee to compete in Olympic track athletics as he sprinted into the 400m semis on his specially made, carbon-fibre blades.

"It's just an experience to be here. It's a dream come true," said Pistorius.

Defending 100m champion Bolt clocked 10.09sec in his first round heat for the blue riband event of the Games while Jamaican compatriot Blake timed 10sec.

However, both men were upstaged in front of 80,000 people at the Olympic Stadium by the 9.88sec run by America's Ryan Bailey.

"I expected it, I'm running well, I'm happy, training is great. Reaction was good," said Bolt, whose build-up to the Games had been hit by a number of worrying niggles.

Meanwhile, Serena Williams won the 'Golden Slam' -- all four Grand Slam titles, plus Olympic gold -- with a thumping 6-0, 6-1 win over Maria Sharapova. She will also play Sunday's women's doubles final with her sister Venus.

Britain won two more rowing titles, and also smashed the women's team pursuit cycling world record -- for the third time this week -- to claim their fourth gold out of five so far in the Velodrome.

In badminton, Li Xuerui took the women's singles title before Chinese compariots Zhao Yunlei and Tian Qing claimed the women's doubles.

And in the day's final event, Jamaica's Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce retained her women's 100m title in 10.75sec, 0.03sec ahead of a lunging Carmelita Jeter.

The man who went on to play for the Patriots and Jets explained that he decided in that moment he would embrace the game.? Martin also said that, on Friday of this week, he finally became a fan of football after hearing 93-year-old Bills owner Ralph Wilson speak passionately about the sport ? and after spending time with current and former Hall of Famers.

Martin shared details about his difficult upbringing, from examples of physical and mental abuse inflicted by his late father on Martin?s mother to an instance in which a man held a gun to Martin?s head, pulling the trigger seven times without the bullet coming out.? And when the man pulled the trigger when the gun wasn?t pointed at Martin?s head, the bullet emerged.

Martin eventually made a deal with God, pledging to live the right way and do whatever God wants from Martin if Martin makes it past 21 years of age.? Now 39, Martin said, ?God has upheld his end of the bargain and I?m gonna spend the rest of my life trying to uphold my end of the bargain.?

Martin upheld his end of the bargain on Saturday night, with the kind of candor that can persuade others in difficult situations to not give up ? or to resolve to find a way to make things better.

US to weigh gay relationships in deportation cases

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Amid pressure from Democratic lawmakers, Homeland Security officials reiterated Friday that a foreigner's longstanding same-sex relationship with a U.S. citizen could help stave off the threat of deportation.

Binational gay couples are eligible for consideration under a federal program designed to focus resources away from low-priority deportation cases and let officials spend more time tracking down convicted criminals, said Marsha Catron, a spokeswoman for the Department of Homeland Security.

However, the Obama administration will not automatically shelve deportation cases or process green card applications involving foreign citizens married to same-sex American partners.

Catron said Homeland Security will continue to comply with a 1996 law that prohibits the government from recognizing same-sex relationships, even as it takes these relationships into consideration when evaluating possible deportation.

The Obama administration last year said it considers the Defense of Marriage law unconstitutional and would no longer defend it in court.

Friday's statement, which builds on comments Homeland Security officials made last summer, came three days after 84 lawmakers led by House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi demanded the agency put its position in writing and disseminate it to Immigration and Customs Enforcement offices to help keep same-sex couples together.

The reassurance was first reported on Thursday by the online news site BuzzFeed. Immigrant advocates welcomed the comments but said a formal policy still is needed.

"It is significant to me because it is expressly inclusive of LGBT families," said Lavi Soloway, an immigration attorney who represents a number of same-sex couples in deportation proceedings.

Yet "as long as it's not in writing it doesn't mean that much for an individual in deportation," Soloway said.

That sentiment was echoed by Pelosi spokesman Drew Hammill, whose boss is awaiting word on whether the administration plans to recognize couples' ties in a memo or field guidance," not just public statements.

"We look forward to the written guidance that we expect would be a logical next step," Hammill said.

Homeland Security officials did not answer questions about whether a written memo would be issued.

The federal government last year began reviewing deportation cases to determine which ones should be top priority and which ones might be shelved. Government attorneys weigh factors such as a person's criminal record, family ties and community relations in making their decisions. ICE officials said at the time that long-term same-sex relationships could be included under the family ties criteria.

As of July 20, government attorneys had reviewed more than 355,000 deportation cases and determined about 6 percent qualified to be placed on hold, according to Immigration and Customs Enforcement. At least half a dozen same-sex couples who were at risk of being separated have won temporary reprieves, either from immigration judges or under the broader review.

Immigrant advocates have criticized the program for failing to help more immigrants, while gay rights advocates have continued pushing for a blanket moratorium on deportations of foreign nationals who are legally married to same-sex spouses or in long-term gay relationships.

Supporters of stricter limits on immigration have decried it as a way of circumventing Congress.

Mark Krikorian, executive director of the Washington-based Center for Immigration Studies, questioned how the Obama administration could simply contradict the 1996 law passed by Congress known as the Defense of Marriage Act.

"I just don't see how you can exercise discretion as though they're spouses if they're not spouses under federal law," said Krikorian, whose group wants more limits on immigration. "It doesn't even matter what you think about DOMA."

In this week's letter, Democratic lawmakers accused Homeland Security officials of overlooking binational same-sex couples for prosecutorial discretion ? even though agency officials said almost a year ago that same-sex marriages and partnerships would be considered a positive factor in their cases.

Meanwhile, a lawsuit seeking green cards on behalf of five foreign citizens married to gay or lesbian Americans has been put on hold while the U.S. Supreme Court considers whether to take up several other cases challenging the Defense of Marriage Act.

Humans prefer to associate with other humans who share their subculture. That?s why there are knitting clubs and fantasy football leagues.

And it turns out that dolphins also form cliques: researchers found that dolphins known as spongers spend most of their time with other spongers. The study is in the journal Nature Communications. [Janet Mann et al, Social networks reveal cultural behaviour in tool-using dolphins]

Spongers are a small subset of dolphins that use marine basket sponges to hunt for prey. The dolphins wear the sponges over their beaks to protect themselves from rocks and broken coral when they are searching for nutritious food on the sea floor.

Sponging is passed down from parents to their young. And because the practice is socially learned, researchers agree that spongers are culturally distinct from other dolphins.

These findings are consistent with the notion that dolphins form fission-fusion societies?where all dolphins in a community belong to the same larger group, but have specific friends whom they spend most of their time with. Of course, scientists have yet to find out which dolphin clique is the coolest.
